FAQs : What can I do if I am being bullied at work?

Once you are certain that you are suffering from harassment, keep a record of events. This will help you recall details when you report the bullying formally. You may not be the only one so try and find out if anyone else at work is suffering or whether anyone has witnessed how you’re being treated. Try approaching the person to make them aware of their behaviour. If this isn’t possible, send them a memo or email. If they continue to act in the same way then they cannot claim to have been unaware of their actions.

Ideally, the company you work for will have a policy relating to workplace bullying that sets out the steps you can take. There is a ‘three-step’ procedure including a written statement, a hearing and the right to appeal - this is often easier with the help of a union rep. Ultimately, you will have to consider whether or not you want to make a formal complaint.
