Employers are looking for interest, skills, commitment, knowledge etc - not how old you are. Being a few years older at graduation is unlikely to make much difference to an employer. Make sure you use any time out productively, perhaps on a gap year or gaining work experience.
Employers are not allowed to use age as a factor in their criteria for recruiting someone (2006 Discrimination Act). You are therefore within your rights to withhold your date of birth on your CV or job application.
Age discrimination can still occur, so it’s important to highlight any extra work experience or skills you may have. Many recruiters complain that graduates lack employability skills and knowledge of work environments. As a mature student, this shouldn’t be an issue.
You should also be aware that application techniques and employers needs are always changing, especially during a recession. Make an appointment with your university careers service to find out more.
