FAQs: What do I need to consider when I hand in my resignation notice?

Once you have accepted a new job you will need to let your current employer know as soon as possible. This can often be a nerve-wracking experience, particularly if you have worked for them for a long time. In the first instance, you may wish to speak to your manager so that they can start to make arrangements to find your replacement as soon as possible.

You will also need to put your resignation in writing, as your employer may consider that your notice is not official until you do this. The letter will need to include the date on which you intend to leave. This will depend on your notice period. If you are not sure about the length of your notice period, check your contract of employment or speak to a member of the personnel department.

The letter may be addressed to your manager, however, a copy will also need to go to your personnel department as they will send you a written acknowledgement and ensure that your final payment details are processed.

Make sure that you will be paid for any outstanding holiday pay or final bonus payments. It is also possible that you may owe your employer some money. For example, if your employer is sponsoring you to attend an external course you will need to make arrangements to pay this back.

It is always a good idea to leave a company on a good note; don’t forget that your boss is likely to be providing your reference and you may even want to return at some point in the future. Make sure that you finish all your work as far as possible. Keep your boss informed about specific projects you are working on and where you are up to. You may even consider leaving notes for your replacement so that they can pick up easily where you left off.
