FAQs : What are my options to switch to a career in law?

There are a number of people who work within the law who have had other careers previously; there are many transferable skills that are key to becoming a successful lawyer such as teamwork, communication, analytical thinking and commercial awareness. These skills can be obtained through numerous other careers. The route into law for those people who have not done an undergraduate law degree is to do the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and then the Legal Practice Course (LPC). The GDL is a course that covers the seven qualifying modules of an undergraduate law degree (contract, tort, criminal, equity and trusts, EU, property and public). It can be taken at a number of institutions and can either be completed full time within a year or part time over two years. There is a cost associated with the GDL.
