Feature : CELTA - the gateway to teaching English

Logo: CELTA

Teaching English to speakers of other languages can be a highly rewarding career, and one which can take you around the world...

You will need an internationally recognised teaching qualification, and CELTA - highly regarded throughout the world - gives you the skills you need and could make getting a teaching job easier, wherever you are in the world.

The most popular English language teacher training course

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) are terms often used to describe qualifications for English language teachers, and CELTA is the most widely taken initial TESOL/TEFL qualification of its kind in the world.

You can take CELTA with no previous teaching experience - we will give you the training you need to quickly build your confidence in the classroom.

How can I study?

There are two ways of studying CELTA face-to-face. You can take CELTA part time, which can take anywhere from a few months to over a year. Alternatively, if you want to start travelling as soon as possible, you can start by taking CELTA full time, and be qualified in four to five weeks. Either way, the course will:

  • teach you the principles of effective teaching;
  • provide you with a range of practical skills;
  • give you hands-on teaching practice.

It is also possible to study online with the Cambridge CELTA Course Online, a flexible way to take CELTA. This type of blended learning course combines collaborative online study with hands-on teaching practice. The course is produced by Cambridge ESOL in partnership with International House London, and leads to the same internationally recognised certificate as the face-to-face CELTA course.

Hands-on teaching practice

CELTA's success is based on its strong practical element, showing employers that you have the necessary classroom skills. CELTA and Cambridge CELTA Course Online use exactly the same model of face-to-face supervised lesson planning, teaching practice, evaluation and feedback, with full support from your teaching practice tutors.

As long as assignments are completed on time and you contribute to discussion forums and live room discussions, the online format allows you to work at your own pace, when and where you choose. Your online course tutor will facilitate your group work and provide feedback on assignments and progress.

Internationally accepted

CELTA is one of the most widely accepted English language qualifications you can take, and because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge, CELTA is internationally recognised and highly respected.
