It's important to be insured whilst travelling, but when it comes to studying abroad, it's even more crucial. With so many different levels of cover, we've made the process a bit easier. Here are the key areas you should look out for…
Good medical cover is an absolute must. Not every country has a free health service and you can be charged a small fortune for medical treatment abroad. If you are into extreme activities like snowboarding or windsurfing, it's worth covering yourself in case of injury.
A year away from family and friends is a long time. Short trips home can be really important and may help ease any homesickness. Check that in doing so, your policy can either be put on hold or interrupted.
If you're planning on working abroad - which is a great idea to make the most of living in a new culture - you should check that this activity won't invalidate any prospective policy.
If you're taking a few high value gadgets abroad with you, such as a laptop, smart phone or photography equipment, you should check that a possessions element of cover is included in your policy - in case of loss of theft.
When you take out an insurance policy, you'll find that each cover section will have an 'excess'. This is the amount of money you pay towards the cost of a claim. For example, if £200 worth of valuables were stolen and the excess was £50, you’d receive £150. Check the excess on each cover section carefully to make sure it's value for money.
If you arrive to catch your train to the airport, only to find that the train has been cancelled or delayed, without the right protection your trip could be ruined. So it's important that you have this cover in place before you go.
Studying abroad is an exciting prospect, and with so much to prepare, remembering to arrange your insurance can be easily forgotten. But it is important and you might be pleasantly surprised at the price.
