PhD Monitoring and supporting (lapses in) professionalism within an MBChB programme: Admission to Graduation

Award details
The School of Medicine takes a holistic view of the student's professionalism. Assessing professionalism starts at the admissions process and continues throughout the programme to ensure students are fit to practise when they graduate. Whilst poor performance in the undergraduate years may lead to referral to the Professional Behaviour Committee, a lack of professionalism is a significant risk factor for other poor performance and disciplinary action in later clinical practice (Papadakis et al. 2005, NEJM). As part of our admissions process candidates undertake a series of 10 seven minute 'mini interviews' (MMI). The MMI includes a range of ethical discussion as well as candidate's communication skills and approach towards teamwork through a series of interactive stations providing a potential assessment of professionalism. In September 2012 a recording and monitoring system, to support the identification of students who demonstrate a ‘lack of professionalism,' was implemented. The system records penalty points, when there is a lapse, and the action taken. We wish to explore the utility of both approaches. To validate the MMI process, and ascertain if 'lapses in professionalism' can reliably provide early warning of students likely to struggle academically or otherwise, this project will carry out an analysis of data from pre-entry, MMI admissions, progression data via assessment and any lapse in professionalism recorded. A range of routine data is available for these purposes or additional data may be gathered. Thus, this PhD will focus on the topic of professionalism, its assessment and implications within undergraduate medical training. It will primarily utilise quantitative data analysis.
