Study abroad can vary from short term summer study programmes to a year away to study before, during or after your UK studies. Opportunities for undergraduates

  • The Erasmus exchange programme provides study opportunities in partnership European universities. Study on an Erasmus scholarship forms part of your degree. To find out more, contact your university Erasmus coordinator.
  • Your university may have exchange arrangements in place with partner institutions abroad. Ask at your international office for details.
  • University grants may be available to help fund visits to other institutions or overseas expeditions to support your work on your dissertation.
  • You may be able to apply for a Shell Personal Development Award of up to £500.

Opportunities for postgraduates

For general ideas go to guide to studying abroad, or for more specific information, including suggestions about funding, try Shell Personal Development Awardand Vitae. There are a few UK programmes designed to help finance exchanges for postgraduate students and researchers.

  • Your university may offer small grants to help finance exchanges or visits to other institutions.
  • Erasmus grants of up to £3,000 are available to postgraduate students (contact your university Erasmus coordinator for details).
  • Fulbright awards to facilitate study and research for postdoctoral fellows in the USA - get details from the Fulbright Commission.
  • Spend part of your time studying for your PhD in an institution outside the UK. For suggestions, including ideas for funding, try Find a PhD.
