Wales Audit Office
The Wales Audit Office support the Auditor General as the public sector watchdog for Wales. Our mission is to let the people of Wales know whether public money is being managed wisely - or not! And we work closely with public bodies across Wales to help them understand how they can improve.
The Wales Audit Office employ around 260 staff and contractors with a variety of different skills and roles to deliver our work. While most of our staff work directly on audit, we also have staff working in areas such as Business Services, Finance, HR, Communications and IT. Our main offices are located in Cardiff, Ewloe (although it is likely to move in June 2016 to Abergele) and Penllergaer and we also work from client office throughout Wales.
Wales Audit Office staff support the work of the Auditor General across Wales. The Auditor General is totally independent and is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen and is not a civil servant. The Wales Audit Office Board is responsible for employing staff, procuring services and providing other resources to enable the Auditor General to do his work. It also monitors and advises the Auditor General. The Board members including the Auditor General, non executives and staff members.
The Wales Audit Office and the Auditor General have an overarching strategic aim –
We audit the financial acounts of a number of bodies - in total there are more than 800 public sector organiations - including:
- The Welsh Government
- Welsh councils
- National Health Service bodies
- Assembly Sponsored public bodies
- Welsh Police & Crime commissioners and Chief Constables
- Pension Funds
- Colleges
- National Parks
We also issue reports on:
- How services are being delivered
- Assessing whether value for money is achieved
- Checking how organisations are planning and delivering improvements
We are also committed to identifying and publising good practice, to help public bodies deliver better services.
