Haematologist : Salary and conditions

  • Starting salaries for haematologist trainees (Band 6): £25,472 - £34,189.
  • Salaries for experienced haematologists (Band 7): £30,460 - £40,157.
  • Salaries for principal scientists, the highest grade at which healthcare scientists work, range from (Band 8) £38,851 to (Band 9) £97,478. See Agenda for Change  for further details.
  • In addition to the salaries stated above, those working in London and the surrounding areas may receive a high cost area supplement of between 5% - 20% of their basic salary.
  • Following training, haematologists are expected to work unsocial hours in the evenings and at weekends because their laboratory services often need to fit in with hospital hours and be available seven days a week.
  • Haematologists working in a laboratory-based role liaise closely with medical and other hospital staff. Clinical haematologists have more direct contact with patients and their families, as well as other clinical professionals.
  • There are opportunities to work in private practice, undertaking outpatient consultations.
  • It is possible to work part time following successful completion of training.
  • Career breaks may be possible but haematologists must keep up to date with any technical developments and would require retraining when they return to work in order to meet registration requirements.
  • Initial employment opportunities are not limited to particular areas of the UK, although relocation is frequently necessary for career progression.
  • Travel during the working day is uncommon although visits to other hospitals/clinics may occur.
