Health promotion specialist: Employers and vacancy sources

In April 2013, as part of the new Health and Social Care Act, responsibility for public health in England will transfer from The National Health Service (NHS)  to local authorities. A new body, Public Health England , will be created and each council area will have a health and wellbeing board.

Currently, the main employer of health promotion specialists in the UK is the NHS via primary care trusts.

Other employers include:

  • local authorities;
  • specialist health promotion departments;
  • national agencies in the health and voluntary sectors (such as NHS Health Scotland and the Public Health Agency for Northern Ireland );
  • voluntary organisations;
  • charitable organisations;
  • Sure Start  
  • neighbourhood renewal schemes;
  • healthy living centres;
  • organisations working in health action zones and sports action zones.

International opportunities exist with organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO)  and charities working in international development such as Oxfam  and Save the Children .
