Insurance claims inspector : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: £13,000 - £17,000.
  • Range of typical salaries with experience: £18,000 - £30,000. Salaries can rise to between £40,000 and £75,000 but will usually require Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) or Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) qualifications in addition to experience.
  • Salaries can also vary depending on employer.
  • Additional benefits can include a company car, medical insurance, life insurance and discounted insurance premiums, as well as profit share and non-contributory pension.
  • Working hours are usually from nine to five, with the possibility of some extra hours. Work may involve occasional additional/unsocial hours, for example when interviewing police for information during their nightshift rota.
  • Most of the work involves visiting claimants in their homes or place of work, with occasional office visits or meetings with solicitors and other professionals. Calls to attend a visit can necessitate a quick response and unsocial hours.
  • While some of the larger insurance companies may provide and support career breaks, the opportunity to work part time is rare.
  • Women are currently under-represented in this profession, although the number of women in the role is increasing.
  • Jobs are available in most areas of the country. Offices are usually based in large towns and cities, but claims handlers cover their own 'field', which includes rural areas.
  • The job involves working to tight deadlines, working under pressure and using technology.
  • The dress code is professional.
  • Although travel within a working day to meet clients is frequent, absence from home overnight and overseas travel are uncommon.
