The main areas in which technical support officers are employed are:

  • computer networks - responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining the computers in a large business;
  • desktop support - direct user assistance;
  • contract hardware maintenance - working for a business with contracts to maintain and repair computer hardware;
  • suppliers of vertical software applications (i.e., software applications for a specific business sector, such as retail, travel or pharmaceuticals);
  • managed hosting providers.

Technical support officers work in a wide range of organizations, in both the public and private sector, including major manufacturing firms and service areas, such as:

  • call centres;
  • retailing chains;
  • financial institutions;
  • education (schools, colleges, universities);
  • local government;
  • health trusts;
  • application service providers (ASPs - companies providing software as a service (SAAS), sometimes referred to as cloud computing model where the service is delivered to the customer via the internet).

There are positions for technical support officers in any organisation that depends on reliable computer systems. They are also employed by small businesses that offer a maintenance and repair service.
