Job description-

As part of a City Year team, you will work with children and young people by:

  • Becoming a role model and an integral part of the school team;
  • Providing one-to-one mentoring and tutoring support - for e.g. helping children progress with their reading;
  • Assisting teachers in the classroom - for e.g. acting as the eyes and ears for teachers or concentrating on a small group of focus children;
  • Leading after school activities;
  • Running workshops on important social issues, such as poverty, health and respect;
  • Organising and leading community action projects, stimulating wider community involvement - for e.g. transforming an old derelict playground into a safe and new environment.

Every Friday you will attend our HQ in Islington, or our sponsors' offices, where we train together and run our 'Leadership After City Year programme'. Fridays at City Year are primarily about us helping you with a plan regarding next steps after City Year. It is also a good time to catch up with everyone else on the corps and for sharing tips and ideas with your peers. You could be doing a training course relating to your time in school; or having a mentoring session from one of our corporate partners; work shadowing a senior businessperson in the City, or picking up tips on how to pass entrance tests to FTSE 100 companies.

Company Information
City Year is the leading youth and education charity in London. We tackle two of the biggest social welfare issues in the UK: educational under-attainment and youth unemployment. No other movement for social change offers young people the chance to volunteer full-time for a whole year in inner city schools. City Year is special because we believe young people can change the world.

We are recruiting talented and passionate young people to join our 2013/14 programme. You will need to have the desire to make a difference in local communities whilst challenging yourself to develop key skills that will increase your employability and confidence such as: public speaking, networking, planning and leadership. More than ninety per cent of our corps members are successful in securing a place in higher education or a job after their time with City Year.
