Job description

This role initially requires evaluation of 2 years of data/analysis relating to the built environment which has been collected earlier in the project. A review of the information is required in order to ascertain which elements are key to developing relevant expertise within the companies. An essential component of this role will be the development/evaluation of automated systems and intelligent controls in order to assess the actual performance of state of the art carbon reducing systems in case study buildings. The key responsibilities of the job are as follows:

  1. To review mspace’s current buildings and understand the buildings’ lifecycle design, construction and POE.
  2. To review/understand building technology and low carbon innovation, and the national/regional sustainability and low carbon agendas. Undertake a review of information previously collected in areas of sustainable design and construction; review of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) strategies; support development of intelligent automation and control systems in case study buildings; compare forecast / actual POE performance; analysing utilities consumption across commercial and residential buildings; assess sustainability accreditation opportunities in the design process; produce an integrated flowchart across entire building’s lifecycle.
  3. To support Company-wide adoption of sustainable practices/strategies and technologies; The Associate will be required to agree and implement work to be carried out on further test bed sites; develop and implement monitoring system strategies and methodologies; develop further group POE methodology; develop a sustainability manual and for use by employees and clients; develop horizon-scanning systems and investigate / recommend and install information management systems.

Person requirements

Interest in automated systems and intelligent controls and technology (DE)

  • The desire to study at PhD level (DE)
  • Evidence of ability/interest in straddling both academic and commercial roles (DE)
  • Demonstrable interest in sustainability matters relating to design, construction and use of buildings
  • Able to self-manage and complete projects
  • Able to plan ahead, prioritise and co-ordinate activities
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (IELTs Level 7)
  • Willing to vary working hours according to the workload and flexibly
  • A demonstrable interest in subjects, specialisms or sports outside of work/education

Qualification and experience requirements

First degree (minimum of 2:1) in a technical degree (eg science / technology / engineering) (ES)

  • Postgraduate qualification (ES)
  • Capable of modelling complex data sets using relevant tools (eg Mathlab) (ES)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of sustainability and evidence of interest in architecture / built environment (DE)
