Latest news: £17million jobs boost for the North East

Nearly 100 new pharmaceutical jobs will be created in the North East after the region won a financing bid from the Regional Growth Fund. 09/11/2011

The investment will safeguard new roles in Northumberland, North Tyneside and Gateshead after the successful joint bid by Northumberland County Council and the Tyne and Wear Development Company.

Piramal Healthcare will use the money to hire 46 new staff and expand its business and exports.

‘This is most welcome news. The funding will go a long way towards supporting our ambitious growth plans over the next five years. The grant will enable us to invest in new capabilities which will enable us to enter new markets worldwide,’ said site leader Jarrett Palmer.

Another company benefiting is Shasun Pharma Solutions, who will use their portion of the funding to create 29 new jobs to aid their plans to develop a drug combating Alzheimer’s disease.

‘This project will contribute to the development and production of a marketable API with efficacy against a disease which represents one of the biggest challenges facing the medical sector worldwide - the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related dementia,’ said Shasun Pharma Solutions site leader, John Wiper.

Aesica Pharmaceuticals, with sites in Newcastle and Cramlington, will use the funding to hire new employees as it diversifies its science and pharmaceutical business.

‘This is very good news for Aesica and will enable us to invest in introducing new products to the market, the majority of which are destined for export markets. Furthermore, it will help to secure the continued viability of the Cramlington site, providing long-term job security for our employees,’ said Aesica’s managing director API business unit Kevin Cook.
