Graduate and postgraduate apprenticeships will be available in law, accountancy and advanced engineering, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced. 07/01/2013

Level six and seven apprenticeships, which are equivalent to Bachelors and Masters degrees, will soon be available for the first time, after changes to the Specification of Apprentices Standards for England (SASE).

The schemes are under development, with accountancy, law and human resources currently in the pipeline. The focus is on making vocational learning an attractive alternative to traditional higher education.

For example, BPP Law School is in the process of developing a legal apprenticeship pathway to provide a different road into the law profession and qualification as a solicitor.

James Hammill, director of BPP Professional Apprenticeships, said, 'Apprenticeships are an excellent way for employers to recruit talent early and design a structured training programme that incorporates technical learning as well invaluable work-based skills.'

Skills minister, Matthew Hancock said, 'In the past, apprenticeships were restricted to only some trades and some parts of the economy. Now we are introducing apprenticeships in all types of jobs, including a new route to the professions, to ensure everyone can reach their potential.

'These new apprenticeships will help more young people to receive on-the-job training at top companies like BPP Law School, ensuring a vocational route to success in accounting, insurance and law.'
