Demand rises five times above other staffing trends, according to latest figures from the Reed Engineering Job Index. 13/10/2011
The increase in engineering jobs has risen five times faster, year on year than any other sector. Demand for engineers is 88% higher than it was last September and while demand across industries such as construction has also risen, the general Reed Job Index has increased at the much lower rate of 16%.
Each month the Reed Job Index tracks the number of new job opportunities and the salaries available compared to the previous month, against a baseline of 100 set in 2009.
Latest figures show that salaries for new engineers are generally stagnant and this is especially the case in London.
‘It is really striking to see that demand for engineers has reached such a high level, and has continued to rise in September in contrast to falling job demand elsewhere across the economy. This might indicate a much-sought rebalancing of the UK economy, towards production. Employer confidence has risen high enough to make this investment in new recruitment, which is a leading indicator of future engineering growth,’ says Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.co.uk.
The Reed Job Index is based on data compiled by the UK’s largest recruitment site. Each day the site carries over 100,000 job opportunities from 9,000 recruiters across 37 sectors all over the UK.
