: Internships that pay
Science graduates looking for a paid internship with real career prospects should look at the ORBIS Bioscience Graduate Training Programme, which provides placements at leading companies.
The scheme is managed by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and offers 60 graduates paid internships over 26 weeks, including training and skills development programmes.
Interns get to work at a range of organisations, from large pharmaceutical companies to biotech start-ups, with employee numbers from 10 to 100,000. The scheme aims to provide graduates with the employability skills that will allow them to stand out from the crowd.
Successful ORBIS candidates also receive twelve days of bio-business training prior to starting their placements. The training is provided by industry experts with a clear understanding of the skills requirements in the bioscience sector.
The scheme proved successful in its first year, with over half of the interns going on to secure a graduate job within the sector.
Jayanie Meinerikandathevan interned at Biocaldol Ltd, a SME bioscience company, and was later offered a permanent position.
‘I found it difficult to find a job during the economic downturn as employers wanted someone with experience and knowledge of working in the commercial bioscience sector,’ she says.
‘One of the real advantages of ORBIS was that no prior experience was required, so it seemed like the perfect way to gain experience and knowledge of the sector.’
For the companies involved, the scheme allows them to monitor potential recruits working within the company, as well providing educated staff to work on new or stalled projects.
