London's TV and film industry has received a cash injection which has the potential to create up to 1,000 jobs 05/04/2013
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced that investment will increase from £1.25million to £2million, with the extra £750,000 set aside to develop high-end television and animation sectors.
The money will be invested through Film London, an agency that supports UK productions. It is thought the cash could bring in £200million worth of additional expenditure to the UK economy.
Speaking at Ealing Studios, the home of shows such as Downton Abbey, Boris Johnson, said, 'We have an unprecedented opportunity to grow this exciting sector to deliver jobs, produce more world-class British drama and, above all, make London the city of choice for TV and animation production.
'It's time for London to fulfil its potential as the world leader and employer it's destined to be in this field. Let's make sure that all future Downtons are filmed on our turf.'
Adrian Wootton, chief executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said, 'With the new fiscal incentives, coupled with investment from the mayor, the capital has the potential to become a world leader for the production industries, retaining and creating valuable jobs and encouraging new investment to boost the economy.'
According to Film London, the capital city is now the third busiest in the world for film-making, behind only Los Angeles and New York.
