Thousands of female university students won’t even consider applying for a job in the automotive industry, according to the results of a recent survey carried out by Autocar. 05/05/2011
The new research revealed that only 3.5% of female university students are aiming for a career in the motor industry and 61.5% will not consider the industry as a future career option at all.
The results were extremely different for male students, with 61% saying that they are very interested in the motor industry.
Autocar editor Chas Hallett commented on the results. ‘It’s disappointing to learn that so few female students are considering a career in the motor industry.’
Career prospects in the sector range from design through to showroom, including engineering-led roles, specialist marketing, public relations, sustainability, accounting, policy, human resources and customer-facing opportunities.
Autocar is launching a national competition to identify, support and develop top automotive talent of the future. The Autocar-Courland Next Generation Award is open to students from UK universities and invites applicants to use their expertise to write a 500-word proposal suggesting an improvement to benefit the automotive business. Ideas for proposals include a new invention, a legislative or corporate policy change or the adoption of a new convention.
‘We really do want to encourage female students to put pen to paper and enter,’ said Chas. ‘It’s a great opportunity.’
The winner will receive a £7500 cash prize and one month’s work experience at each of the automotive organisations supporting the award.
