More than 50 skilled graduate jobs are set to be created by international rope maker Bridon at a new plant in Tyneside. 19/11/2012
The factory will produce the largest and most complex ropes for offshore use in the world.
This could be great news for graduates in the North East, as heavy industry returns to an area affected by de-industrialisation in the 1980s.
As well as creating 50 new roles, the project will secure 150 jobs at other sites in the region.
The £30million project is supported by £2.2million worth of funding from the government's Regional Growth Fund .
Upon opening the site, business and enterprise minister Michael Fallon said, 'This is a big day for the North East. The Regional Growth Fund is playing a pivotal role in supporting British manufacturing.
'Government support for Bridon in the North East has given the firm the confidence it needs to invest, hire skilled staff and grow.
'Not only are both projects creating much-needed jobs for the area, but the multiplier effect should not be underestimated in attracting investment and new business to the North East.'
Nick Brown, Labour MP for Newcastle East, added, 'This state-of-the-art facility will provide a welcome, long-term business and employment boost to Newcastle, creating many highly skilled jobs and encouraging the growth of industry in the North East.'
Bridon International has four manufacturing sites in the UK, with its head office located in Doncaster and bases in Newcastle and Glasgow.
