Graduates considering a career in the armed forces may want to consider a Ministry of Defence (MoD) civilian role, following comments from one expert. 20/11/2012
In an interview with MOD.uk, ex-soldier Alan Lawson spoke of his Permanent Joint Headquarters J8 job in the finance and human resources department at the MoD's Northwood headquarters, having held numerous positions supporting operations as a civilian.
The 55-year-old started as a policy advisor in Iraq while deployed as a reservist, and has most recently been in Afghanistan, based in Camp Bastion, as a civil secretary.
This role required him to oversee all of the deployed British civilian support staff, look after people, work alongside the finance team and supervise the small commercial team.
According to the MoD, civil servants working for the department will usually deploy on the same terms and conditions as those in the military, which means embarking on six-month tours with a two-week break in between.
Mr Lawson explained that new MoD civil servants quickly realise how fun their role is, and often volunteer on subsequent occasions.
'You're working very hard, but you're doing a worthwhile job, and it really is rewarding,' he explained.
