Latest news: Mouchel safeguards 8,000 jobs

The restructuring of UK public infrastructure firm Mouchel has secured thousands of construction-related positions across the country, it has been revealed. 01/09/2012

Mouchel Group, which helps to build and maintain motorways, was placed into administration last week (24 August) after a difficult 12 months.

It has had to deal with millions of pounds of debt, a big drop in profits as a result of statistical and accounting errors, as well as the resignations of its chief executive and interim chairman.

However, the firm has now been sold to MRBL Limited, and chief executive Grant Rumbles stated that this means 'the long-term future of this business is secure'.

Mouchel Group was established in 2003 following the merger of Mouchel and Parkman. Mouchel has a long history in the construction and civil engineering sector, having been established 1897 and introducing reinforced concrete to the UK.

It then went on to construct the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool and the cooling towers for London's Battersea Power Station, among other significant projects.

The news comes after construction output for the last three months was revised upwards by the Office for National Statistics. The organisation recently revealed construction output actually shrank by 3.9% in that time, rather than the original figure of 5.2%.
