Young gardeners looking to develop their skills have received a boost with the launch of a new bursary that aims to increase the number of gardeners working in the heritage horticulture sector in the UK. 04/08/2011
The bursary has been awarded to the Heritage Horticulture Skills Scheme through Heritage Lottery Funding and will operate for four years, taking on six trainees per year.
Successful applicants will receive a grant of £12,857 to cover an 18 month placement at an associated garden site in Wales, where they will undertake practical-based modules in specialised, heritage horticultural techniques. The bursary will be provided tax-free in six three-monthly instalments.
Applicants must be over 18, have an RHS practical level one qualification or equivalent and not have undertaken any previous horticultural traineeships.
The successful trainees will work at one of the following garden sites: Aberglasney, Bodnant, Cardiff City Council, Dyffryn Gardens, National Botanic Garden of Wales, Newport City Council and St Fagans.
