The Bar council has released a series of videos to communicate its No Bar to the Bar campaign. 13/07/2011
Becoming a barrister is very rewarding. However, many graduates are deterred by the myths surrounding the profession. By promoting social mobility, the videos hope to dispel these myths.
Isn’t the Bar just for privileged white middle class Oxbridge males?
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Barristers reflect the community that they serve and so the modern Bar is inclusive and diverse. Meritocracy is the currency; not birthright.

Regardless of gender, backgrounds or status, anyone can become a barrister. You’ll need a good degree, the ability to think on your feet, self-confidence and strong communication skills. Extra curricular activities will present you as well-rounded and a worthy candidate.
I don’t know any barristers. How can I get work experience?
Most chambers accept work experience applications from anyone who has begun a law degree or GDL. Some will also accept applications before this stage. Being resourceful and determined holds absolute sway over applications.
Before beginning your Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), you are required to join an Inn of Court. The Inn’s provide financial assistance at each stage of becoming a Barrister, along with assisting any work experience applications.
These short films were produced by the Four Inn’s and the Bar Council, after a report suggested films would befit students and their understanding of the Bar. The emphasis was on allowing people from less opportune backgrounds to make comprehensive and informed decisions about career aspirations with the Bar.
