Latest news: Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award

If you want to boost your career prospects then take a look at Raleigh’s £2,000 Graduate Bursary Award. 28/02/2011

The scheme will be coming to an end on 14th March 2011. However, it has already enabled over 300 recent UK graduates to positively benefit from Raleigh’s volunteering expeditions overseas. As well as providing the opportunity for volunteers to work on sustainable community and environmental projects in disadvantaged communities, the award gives graduates a much-needed chance to boost their confidence, leadership, teamwork and other soft skills, to improve their employment prospects on their return.

The scheme has been a resounding success, with 100% of graduates who took part in expeditions in autumn 2009 now in full time employment, training or further study.

‘After graduating I applied and applied and got nowhere. On my return from Raleigh, the job climate was just as bad as it had been before, however what had improved, was me. I applied again and was then able to show off my achievements and talk with real conviction and passion about what I had done on expedition. As important as they are on expedition, skills such as survival, medical and dive training weren’t the most important lessons that Raleigh taught me. It was actually the frame of mind, my sense of purpose and achievement and my attitude that anything is possible is what has really helped,’ says architecture graduate Nicholas Oldroyd.

What’s more, a Raleigh expedition complements the hard skills gained at university and provides valuable hands-on experience in various fields of work. The construction projects can pave the way for architecture, construction and engineering graduates to gain practical work experience directly related to their degrees; Radio Raleigh is ideal for any budding broadcasters or communications graduates; talented photographers and videographers are always needed to document what goes on in the field; the Raleigh blog is a great platform for any journalism or English graduates to put their skills to good use, and getting involved in the charity work we do on expedition provides key insights for those looking to go into International Development.

There are still limited places available for any 2009 or 2010 graduates who meet certain eligibility criteria for the award, and are interested in taking part in a 10 week expedition to Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua or India in summer or autumn 2011.
