Latest news: Scottish construction review 'can preserve jobs'

Graduates looking for a job in the construction industry could soon find that the Scottish public sector offers range of new employment opportunities. 11/10/2012

A comprehensive review of how public construction contracts, worth some £2billion, are awarded in the country was launched by the Scottish government last week.

Many professionals believe that there is too much red tape and regulation involved for contractors when bidding for this kind of work, which consequently drives up the cost.

However, those looking to start their career in the industry may benefit from what ministers call a 'root and branch' investigation, which has the potential to significantly improve the nation's construction sector in the future.

Nicola Sturgeon, deputy first minister and cabinet secretary for infrastructure, investment and cities, said, 'The review will examine how we can improve the impact of this spending on Scotland’s economic growth and on the quality of Scotland’s built environment.

'[It will help] to support jobs, to promote sustainable working practices and, most importantly, [reap] maximum gains for Scotland's economy.'

The news comes after a survey, carried out by Constructionline in July, found 25% of public sector clients are likely to cancel construction projects by the start of 2013

Due to the effect of budget cuts, a further 25% expect to ask suppliers to reduce their prices.
