Latest news: Scottish Power to create jobs

Energy company to recruit 1,500 staff in Scotland over the next ten years with plans to spend £3billion over the next decade. 31/08/2011

The Spanish-owned company will upgrade its electricity network with designs in place to increase its use of renewable energy resources.

Scottish Power is also eager to recruit graduates and apprentices to fill the roles in an effort to keep the age profile of the industry low.

‘It is no secret that our industry has an ageing workforce, and we need to encourage new blood into the fold. We envisage taking on up to 200 new graduate engineers and key apprentices in the next four years. Up to 1,000 new highly-skilled roles are required across Scottish Power by 2020,’ said First Minister Alex Salmond.

Along with substantial recruitment of apprentices, the company suggested it will also be retraining under 25s into highly-skilled jobs over the next ten years. As four in five current employees are set to retire over the next 15 years, a commitment to a major recruitment drive is in place in order to encourage the next generation of workers into the industry.

‘As well as boosting our own staff intake, we will also be sitting down with contractors and suppliers to outline what we will need over the next decade to deliver this work and to encourage them to invest in a new generation of workers as well,’ said Mr Salmond.
