Rachel's job log: 34
Rachel Killington does freelance web work at her local radio station as well as taking any opportunities to get on air. Winter shelter January - the weather is horrible, it’s cold and dark, and even the prospect of snow (which didn’t materialise) hasn’t cheered things up. The miserable winter weather seems more bearable in December, as there is Christmas to look forward to, but for now I look forward to settling down in front of the telly under a duvet with a microwave meal or beans on toast (I still haven’t really got to grips with the idea of cooking for one!)
Personally, I think hibernation is the way forward, and I remember watching ‘Blue Peter’ as a child when they used to wrap the tortoise up in a cosy little box for the winter, only for it to wake up in the spring when all the cold, wet and miserable weather had passed. Seasonal cheerWhat probably makes the inevitable ‘January Blues’ worse is the fact that Christmas was so good - my presenting stint was great fun, and although I have yet to hear from the station PC about whether I was any good or not, I have had some very positive comments which must mean it wasn’t too bad! I had a great time out of work too - I spent my first Christmas together with Neil, managed to catch up with friends who usually live abroad, and was thoroughly pampered by my mum for the few days we were there, so being back home on my own, with mountains of washing, bills to pay and housework to do hasn’t been the nicest experience. At work since mid December there has been less coming through, and although I reassured myself that this was probably due to the pre-Christmas wind-down, it hasn’t really busied up an awful lot yet. Although I have been told there is work for me until the end of the financial year, I don’t want it to end there, as I really do love my job. If that were to happen then it would be understandable - I was only promised work for the summer months, and have been extremely fortunate to have gotten this far, but I love the work I do. I’m really happy and I don’t want to lose that. New challengesOn a different note, I am going to start my training on the travel desk this week which is very exciting, and it will hopefully open up lots more opportunities, which is a very good thing. I’m a great believer that you can never know too much, and any chance to learn new skills I’ll grab with both hands, which is what I intend to do. So for me, it’s new year, new challenges, and I’m determined to shake off the January blues, and turn them into something positive. A lot of the things that worry me are out of my control anyway, and I know change can be a very good thing for all concerned. I believe that if you try your best, everything will turn out for the best, and at the end of the day, that’s all any of us can do. Happy New Year! See Rachel's previous job logs:
