Kirstie's job log: 25

Kirstie Nicols has just started a new sales job, but a Masters in journalism beckons.

No cause for alarm clock

Photograph: Kirstie I’ve been trying to start getting myself sorted for leaving work in September, and moving down to London. The first thing that came to mind was to make sure I had taken all my holiday entitlement off, so in order to save HR some paperwork when I left, I took last week off.

It was great to get up late without hearing the alarm go off, and to get to listen to the whole of my favourite radio show without having to switch it off before heading into work. My favourite moments about time off work is when you look at the clock during the day, and you can imagine what you should be doing and how stressed it would be making you on a normal day. I think I used my time to great effect as I managed to finish off several things I’ve been wanting to do for a while. For instance, I’ve finally managed to see every episode of Sex and the City, as well as the movie. Twice.

I did attempt to spend some time doing constructive things. After writing the last blog, I decided it was time I knuckled down and found some kind of reliable part-time work so I can save a little extra before September, when I am forced to live on alcohol and 9p noodles once again. I applied for a couple of evening bar jobs, and heard back from one about coming in for an interview (by experience do they mean ‘has spent a lot of time in one’? ) Unfortunately, it turns out most companies aren’t looking for someone who’s only planning to stick around for a couple of months; it seems they’d actually prefer someone worth spending the time training, in the hope they might be there for a while.

After that knock back, I decided to look for somewhere that might let me move to a store closer to my uni, so I could keep working while studying. So, after having a long argument with myself, I handed in an application to the nearby Golden Arches. Thanks to my extensive experience throughout the years (I’ve gone from Pot Washer to Silver Service Waitress – and yes I’m proud!) I was invited for an interview and offered the position. I’ve had my training day - one of those fun health and safety videos followed by a lecture on how great a place the company is, and I start my first shift this weekend. I can’t wait.

When I’m off work, it’s the only time I actually don’t look forward to the weekend, because by then you know your holiday is almost over and you’re gonna be back to work with everyone else come Monday. This weekend I had something to look forward to, however; a school reunion with some of the girls I hadn’t seen in nearly five years. It was really odd to see everyone and see how much they’d changed; while at the same time it was like no one had changed at all.

When we were last all together we were 18 and just about to start uni, now we’ve all graduated and are starting to go down different paths. There’s the artistic one, heading into fashion and theatre; the sporty one hoping to get into the RAF; the clever one doing a job I don’t understand (and knew I never would); and the sensible one who’s started planning for the future. Then there’s me, heading back into education and hopefully, eventually, journalism. I wonder what adjective my friends would use to describe me!

So the holiday is over now and it’s back to work again. It’s lucky that at the moment I’m really enjoying my job, otherwise I’m not sure if I could have got up and got out on the Monday morning. Of course I have my new job to look forward to this Saturday; and I’m not sure if I’ll be enjoying that one quite as much!
