Advisory teacher: Job description and activities

Local education authorities (LEAs) provide advisory and inspection services to meet the training and development needs of teachers and managers in schools and to help raise standards. They do this by:

Advisers are often experienced teachers who are seconded by LEAs from classroom positions, usually for two or three years. They are usually linked to specific groups of schools and may work on specific projects, such as truancy or special educational needs, or in particular subject areas. They are generally based in LEA offices or at a teachers' centre, and travel around to different schools.

Advisers are required to keep up to date with the latest educational initiatives and help schools to interpret and implement these.

Job titles vary; advisers also tend to be known as consultants.
