Aeronautical engineer: Career development

The aerospace industry offers a range of career development opportunities including specialist engineering roles, project management, procurement and planning, teaching and consultancy.

The aerospace industry has a strong track record of investing in its workforce through funding and supporting employee training, as well as encouraging membership of relevant engineering institutions, such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) .

Professional registration demonstrates your commitment and recognises your skills and experience. There are three types of registration. Engineering Technician (EngTech) is for professional technicians with supervisory or technical responsibility. Incorporated Engineers (IEng) are engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status adds impressive credentials to your CV, demonstrating a commitment to your career and a desire to work at the top tier of the engineering profession. Registering demonstrates that you have reached the benchmark set by the Engineering Council UK (ECUK) .

Much of the technology involved in this setting is cutting-edge. Aeronautical engineers are often involved in highly innovative new concepts, which makes it essential for them to continuously develop themselves personally and professionally. The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAES) provides conferences, training courses and specialist groups to enable CPD within the sector.

Having trained as an aeronautical engineer, you may move into more specific areas such as aerodynamics, aeronautics, aviations systems engineering or fluid dynamics. Some pilots originally trained as aeronautical engineers. Employment in Europe and abroad is possible, although language skills are likely to be very important. It is important that any applicant can express themselves using technical language. Further information on the European perspective may be found at Fédération Européenne d'Associations Nationales d'Ingénieurs (FEANI)
