Aeronautical engineers are also employed by original equipment manufacturers, including airframe manufacturers, as well as large companies that specialise in aircraft systems. These companies are supported by smaller niche companies that focus on particular capabilities.

Aeronautical engineers are employed in civil aviation by airlines and airfreight operators. There is also a growing market for maintenance, repair and overhaul of military and commercial aircraft. Many engineers choose to undertake sub-contract work, giving them the opportunity to experience work in different companies and countries.
