Careers consultant: Salary and conditions

  • Typical starting salary for a new entrant/recently qualified consultant: £23,000 - £27,000 (data collected April 08).
  • Salaries at senior level/with experience (e.g.,after 10-15 years in the role): up to £45,000 (data collected April 08).
  • Progression to senior management can yield salaries of £60,000 and above (data collected April 08).
  • The salaries quoted are typical for consultants employed by large organisations or consultancies. However, salaries vary so it is worth checking for specific pay scales with prospective employers.
  • Rates of pay for freelance consultants range from about £180 per day (for outplacement work) to £750 per day (or more) for supporting organisational change programmes.
  • Working hours are nine to five. Career breaks and part-time work are both possible.
  • It is common for careers consultants to work on a self-employed or freelance basis. Freelance work requires a good deal of experience, contacts, entrepreneurial abilities and capital to establish the business. Your salary will fluctuate according to your success and the flow of new clients and businesses. It is usual for self-employed consultants to be established near to a major centre of population and business in order to generate a client base.
  • Consultants working for organisations normally work at their clients' premises.
  • Jobs are quite widely located, with the majority of consultants based close to major cities. The largest concentration of jobs is in the South East.
  • There are relatively small numbers of careers consultants, but opportunities are growing as the trend towards flexible career patterns increases the potential client group.
  • The gender balance in the profession is not known, but the consensus, as in related occupations, is that there tend to be more women than men working in this field.
  • Travel during the working day may be required and is particularly likely for freelance and self-employed consultants, who need to go to their various clients' premises.
