Communications engineer: Typical employers/vacancy sources

Typical employers

The main employers of communications engineers are the leading telecommunications companies. Vacancies can also be found in the public sector and in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that specialise in communications technology. There are also in-house posts with equipment manufacturers, technical services companies, large government departments, local authorities and transport providers. Another option is work with small telecommunications consultancies.

Communications engineering is full of variety: some jobs focus on the technical side, while others have a managerial emphasis. After you gain technical expertise, you may consider self-employment.

The telecommunications sector has been affected by the recession, though not as seriously as other sectors such as banking or marketing. Opportunities still exist for motivated and enthusiastic graduates but competition is fierce, so you will have to stand out.

Sources of vacancies

Search graduate jobs on this site.

Specialist recruitment agencies may handle vacancies. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC)  has a directory of agencies searchable by sector.

Some jobs are not advertised, so it may be productive to make speculative applications to employers. To search for employers in the sector you can use business directories, such as the National Employer Service Employer Directory . Networking is very important, so make sure that you attend employer presentations and sector specific career fairs.
