  • Range of typical salaries with five years' experience: £45,000 - £70,000 or higher (salary data collected Aug 09).
  • Range of typical salaries at senior level: £80,000 - £130,000. The average salary for a FTSE100 company secretary is £188,500 (salary data collected Aug 09). See the Chartered Secretary Magazine  job section for up-to-date salary information.
  • Normal office hours are usual, though additional hours may often be required to accommodate lengthy meetings, complete reports for regulatory deadlines, etc.
  • Part-time posts are reasonably common.
  • The work is mainly office based. Some mobility may be necessary with larger companies that have subsidiaries or multiple sites, which are also likely to require attendance at meetings away from the main base on occasions.
  • Formal business wear is generally expected.
  • There are many opportunities for experienced company secretaries to be self-employed or work freelance. Chartered accountants and solicitors in sole private practice often take on a company secretary role for small local businesses. Chartered secretaries may also work as sole traders, in partnerships or companies, offering company secretarial services, or in professional practice offering similar services as part of a larger organisation.
  • Jobs are widely available. Opportunities exist in most major towns and cities, although positions with blue chip companies are mainly at head offices in London and larger cities.
  • Travel within a working day and overnight absence from home are occasionally required.
  • Overseas work or travel is uncommon, unless working for an international company.
