  • Range of typical salaries at senior level and/or with experience (e.g. after 10-15 years in the role): £30,000 - £80,000, with 72% of middle managers earning between £30,000 and £50,000 (salary data collected Mar 08).
  • Salaries vary considerably according to the geographical location, sector and size and nature of the employing organisation, with salaries around 15% higher in London (salary data collected Mar 08). The level of pay will vary depending on professional background.
  • Working hours vary according to the industry. The public sector typically has working hours of nine to five, Monday to Friday. Flexitime and other benefits, including a final salary pension scheme, health insurance and an option to work from home, are sometimes available. In the private sectors, hours are more likely to vary, with some weekend work.
  • The work can involve both office-based activities and field work, which can be conducted outside in all weathers. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required.
  • There may be considerable travel within a working day for which mileage for site visits may be payable.
  • Self-employment and freelance work are possible in environmental consultancy. Part-time work or career breaks may be possible in some organisations.
  • Work is mostly regional, although opportunities exist throughout the UK. In some organisations, there are opportunities to travel and work oversees.
  • Women continue to be under-represented in the profession. Data collected from the Environmental Data Services (ENDS)  Salary and Careers Survey 2008 shows that there are two-thirds more men than woman in the profession. This survey had the highest female response rate since 2001, however, which may be an indication that more woman are coming into this field.
