This Case Study belongs to IT consultant.
Rohit graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and a Masters in Analysis, Design and Management of IT Systems.
I work for Deloitte, one of the largest professional services firms in the world, operating in over 140 countries. I chose Deloitte not only because of its reputation as an employer and services provider, but also because of its culture.
I am currently a practitioner within the Technology Integration competency of the Consulting service line. I took the decision to pursue a career as an IT management consultant during the penultimate year of my undergraduate degree in chemical engineering. However, I decided to pursue a Masters in Analysis, Design and Management of IT Systems at LSE first, before moving into the job role.
I think the key reason for getting the job was the ‘fit’. After speaking to many Deloitte practitioners at LSE events, I had a good understanding of what life at Deloitte was like.
The most relevant experience I took away from my degree was working with diverse teams, making presentations in class and developing an aptitude for learning things that were absolutely new to me. My studies weren’t very relevant to the role, but I was required to meet the minimum academic eligibility criteria. The focus of the Deloitte selection process was on my competency and not the specifics of my academic degree. In my opinion, people skills and time management are most relevant, due to the nature of the work required. An interest in technology and an ability to comprehend new and often obscure topics is important as well.
I have had the opportunity to take up much greater responsibility than would normally be expected from my grade. In terms of role development, I have moved from being a junior member of a relatively large team to coordinating and managing small projects.
The part I love most about my job is that there isn’t a ‘typical’ day at all! In my current role, I am a member of three of the client’s decision-making bodies: the Technical Design Authority, the Change Request Board and the Issues Board. In these, I act as an advisory for new projects, solutions and architectures. Most of the other day-to-day tasks are related to the project that I currently manage. The project team comprises client staff, third party service providers and contractors. I am responsible for creating work plans, schedules, milestones, coordinating all sourcing and procurement activities, communications and issue resolution. I love the fact that my role is constantly evolving. Occasionally, I may have to deal with particularly difficult client staff, which is my least favourable bit of the job.
I would like to continue my career at Deloitte, with perhaps a few temporary international secondments. I prefer to be in consulting but would like to gain some experience working in the corporate finance service line as well at some point in my career. Besides working on international projects, which tend to be based primarily in Europe, Deloitte offers opportunities for short-term secondments and even permanent transfer to other Deloitte firms across the globe.
If a career in consulting appeals to you, I would advise you to get as much experience working in teams as possible. It’s not always about what you know, but more about your attitude towards the things you don’t know.
