The number of training contracts registered has risen steadily since 1997 and stood at 6,012 in 2007 (the last year for which figures are available). Just under half of these were in London, with 25% of all training contracts being registered in the City. Well over 90% of all training contracts were in private-practice firms, with about a third of these being in very large firms (with over 80 partners).

Training contracts with small-to-medium-sized non-commercial firms are often found as the result of speculative applications, rather than by applying for advertised vacancies in standard directories. Opportunities for contracts can also arise as a result of candidates making a good impression during vacation work placements.
