Recreation assistant: Job description and activities

Recreation assistants work as part of a team under the general direction of a leisure or fitness centre manager, organising, supervising and leading a range of leisure, fitness and health activities and assisting in the promotion and development of these activities. They are more commonly found in local authority settings.

Typical work activities may include:

  • monitoring the use of equipment and activities;
  • acting as pool attendant or lifeguard;
  • ensuring the safety of users, staff and equipment;
  • maintaining the cleanliness of facilities;
  • setting up, maintaining and dismantling equipment according to the schedule of activities;
  • reception duties and sales;
  • welcoming customers, dealing with enquiries, emergencies and accidents requiring first aid;
  • assisting in the organisation of sporting or leisure events;
  • providing advice and supervision for the centre's activities.

Relevant work experience in a leisure centre or involvement in a sport is more important than qualifications, although competition for posts makes the possession of a relevant qualification an advantage.

Physical fitness and self-confidence are essential. Necessary life-saving, pool plant operating and first aid certificates can be obtained in-service but criminal records checks will be required before entry.

For more information see Fitness centre manager.
