Mathematicians conduct research in any environment in which data is analysed to identify patterns. These environments include industrial areas and academic disciplines where mathematics is applied in order to understand such issues as commercial trends or social network development. Employers include research councils and institutions, government departments (notably Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) ) and universities.
University-based research is supported by industry and government. Mathematicians are unusual amongst university departments in that their skills can be applied to many subject areas. Applied research is supported mainly by companies. However, relationships between academic and industrial research are increasingly broadening.
Multidisciplinary research is also being supported and encouraged through many initiatives funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) connecting mathematics with engineering and other science disciplines.
Research and development is not restricted to major companies. Small to medium-sized companies can offer excellent opportunities to mathematicians in the early stages of their career.
