PhD: The normal minimum entrance requirement is an upper second class honours degree or master's degree, relevant to the proposed area of study, from a recognised higher education institution in the UK. You should also have experience of academic research in the previous four years, normally in the form of either a master's degree in research methods, an undergraduate degree with a research element in the final year, or work-related experience with evidence through research reports. Course description
The goals of the Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute's postgraduate cosmochemistry programme are to undertake research projects that further our understanding of the origin of the Solar System through laboratory studies of extraterrestrial materials: meteorites, lunar samples, cosmic dust and samples returned by spacecraft. We study the processes by which planets and small bodies evolved to their present state; obtain information about the origin and formation of the Solar System and the time scales involved; and determine the past activity of the Sun. The programme is most suited to applicants with undergraduate degrees in the geosciences or chemistry.

Potential research projects

A range of projects involving the analysis of extraterrestrial materials using a wide variety of analytical techniques are available. These include:

- Study of early Solar System processes and evolution.
- Origin and evolution of prebiotic molecules: from the interstellar medium to the Solar System.
- Origin and formation of planetary bodies.
- Study of pre-solar processes.
- Development of new techniques for the study of extra-terrestrial materials.
