Entry requirements

Applicants for admission will normally be expected to hold a relevant Honours degree with a 2:2 or above from a recognised university or body. In exceptional circumstances, applicants without this qualification may be admitted at the discretion of the Programme Director subject to having an alternative qualification, or an approved level of experience, appropriate to the field of study.

Course content

The theoretical model and philosophical ethos of the programme are based on the person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers. The post-graduate diploma is designed to run over 2 years, successful completion of which allows progression to the MSc. The Master's stage of the programme consists of the participation on the 'Work Based Project and Dissertation Course.'

This qualification has been designed to meet the professional training requirements of COSCA.

The programme aims to enable students to:

• The anthropological, relational ethics foundations of person-centered counselling
• Understand the phenomenological philosophy, and research concerning the person- centred approach.
• Develop a high level of therapeutic presence, competence in person-centred counselling relationships.
• Participate in encounter groups to deepen learning through interaction offers individuals an awareness of their professional developmental needs and the use of counselling and supervision.
• Evaluate the importance of personal development in relation to training as a person-centred counsellor.
• Consider the effect of personal experience, values, attitudes on the counsellor’s practice.
• Develop critical understanding of the place person-centred counselling in the field of counselling and the role counselling plays in society as a whole
• knowledge of psychopathology, assessment formulations, case study and ethical dilemma presentations
• Engage in expressed arts and embodied affectivity to work creatively with material, sounds, words, marking making and movement.
