Course description

This two-year distance learning programme gives you a thorough knowledge of current approaches to the archaeological investigation and interpretation of past landscapes, and to the collection, analysis, management and application of spatial data in archaeological research and professional archaeology and related fields. This programme is ideal if you require a foundation for further research or a vocational qualification for professional development or specialisation.

You will study four core modules on landscape archaeology theory and method, GIS, virtual landscapes, and case studies in landscape archaeology. The core modules cover the theoretical, methodological and technical foundations of landscape archaeology, thematic interpretative frameworks, contemporary GIS, mapping and visualization techniques and critical approaches to the investigation and interpretation of past landscapes. In addition, you will choose two optional modules from a range of topics including field survey (which includes a one-week field school at Birmingham) and advanced GIS and spatial analysis.

Masters students also undertake a 15,000-word dissertation. Diploma students may request to upgrade to this level. The dissertation is your opportunity to undertake a significant piece of independent research on a subject of your choosing guided by an academic supervisor.
