Course description
This part-time course is designed for practising communication professionals. It is for people who want to develop their capacity to think strategically and are ready for a new and personally stretching intellectual challenge. Students debate ideas with the enthusiastic teaching team and like-minded participants. Subjects include principles of strategic communication, technology and communication, rhetoric, internal communication, communication management, and research methods followed by a dissertation. The course is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). Graduates work as communication professionals in private, public and voluntary sector organisations.

Taught modules prepare graduates to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate advanced communication strategies for organisations that operate in complex environments. They include in-depth study of theories of communication which impact internal and external communication practice. Research skills are developed in a taught module and implemented in the research element of the course. The research dissertation allows our masters students to demonstrate a systematic and advanced critical understanding of an aspect of public relations or corporate communication. It enables students to develop critical awareness of current problems and new insights in their chosen area. The dissertation is largely an independent undertaking with support available from a supervisor.

Normally, students on this course are in full-time work. We recommend that you ask your employers to provide written assurance stating that they are aware of the course demands on your time and that you will be supported in your studies.
