Course description: Women and Children's Health research in Liverpool has an international reputation for excellence. The Department of Women's and Children's Health (http://www.liv.ac.uk/obchildhe/) incorporates obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and medical and surgical paediatrics. The Department offers some of the most extensive facilities for research in this area in Europe, providing excellent bases for patient-orientated translational and clinical research. Expertise in Women's Health is based in Liverpool Women's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; expertise in Children's Health is based in purpose built accommodation at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital at Alder Hey. Liverpool Women's Hospital and Alder Hey Children's Hospital are respectively the largest women's and children's hospitals in Europe. The Department return was designated as 'commended' by the 'other hospital based clinical specialties' sub-panel of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The Department's strong programme of translational research is supported by collaborations with Biological Sciences, the Department of Physiology and close links with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Liverpool Wellcome Tropical Centre in Blantyre, Malawi. In the last decade, the Department has received around £32 million in external research grants.
