Aims The programme seeks to provide education and training in the philosophy, traditions and techniques of social/educational research including opportunities to gain knowledge, understanding and skills in quantitative and qualitative methods; and in transferable skills to enable participants to communicate research findings to a wide range of audiences. As such it has two complementary purposes: - It is intended to be a stand alone programme that combines both specialist Education courses and a dissertation with general research training provision to create a programme of taught courses in educational research to equip participants to become independent educational researchers within or outwith academia e.g. practitioners working in schools and in other children's services settings. - It provides a formal training structure for the preliminary year of research leading to a doctorate by thesis.
