Classical studies was one of the first academic subjects to appreciate the possibilities of the digital age. This department is part of a strong research grouping in digital humanities at the OU, and hosts a number of funded research projects of which Dr Elton Barker is Principal Investigator: HESTIA (with colleagues at Southampton, Oxford and Birmingham), Google Ancient Places (with colleagues at Southampton, Edinburgh and UC Berkeley) and Pelagios (with Southampton and the Austrian Institute of Technology).

Research into the ancient and modern reception of antiquity focuses on how the texts, images and ideas of Greek and/or Roman culture have subsequently been transmitted, adapted, rewritten and appropriated. Staff in the Department of Classical Studies' also have particular interests in the relationship between Greek and Roman cultures within antiquity.

Research in Greek and Latin texts includes work in all the main genres (epic, lyric, comedy, tragedy, historiography and philosophical texts) and includes philological and textual analysis as well as the relationship between texts and social and cultural contexts. Staff in the Department of Classical Studies have expertise in a wide range of research areas in Greek and Roman civilization, including: archaeology, art and sculpture; epic, lyric poetry, tragedy and comedy; historiography and philosophy; popular culture and social history; and digital humanities. Research is organised in three clusters: - Greek and Latin texts; - Greek and Roman material culture; - Ancient and modern reception of classical antiquity.
