This course will be designed to provide specialists working in the field of cancer care/care treatment (and those with a specialist interest in oncology) with an in depth knowledge and understanding of cancer in the 21st century. Its impact upon a modern health service and the changing needs of the patient/client group.The course will provide an opportunity to acquire an in depth understanding of issues associated specifically with oncology, and to complement this with knowledge of the research base and practice of advanced skills.

Research in medicinal chemistry and diagnostics is focused on two main areas, bio-medicinal chemistry and analytical science applied to diagnostics. Bio-medicinal research is largely, though not exclusively, directed toward various aspects of cancer, including development of molecules for cell recognition, modification of nucleic acid bases, imaging and targeting of cancer cells (e.g. photodynamic therapy), and small molecule therapeutics.

Our research focuses on the molecular and cellular processes underlying diseases that have a significant impact on society, with the aim of identifying novel therapeutic agents for these conditions. Key themes of our research are: 1) cardiovascular disorders, including those affecting the cerebrovascular network such as multiple sclerosis and stroke and those affecting the heart such as cardiac arrhythmias; 2) anti-cancer therapies; 3) mechanisms underlying ageing at the organismal and cellular level; 4) nervous system tissue engineering and culture modelling; 5) appetite and reproductive physiology; and 6) interactions between immune and adipose cells.
